Project Description

Kochin

Kochi (also known as Cochin) is a city in southwest India’s coastal Kerala state. It has been a port since 1341, when a flood carved out its harbor and opened it to Arab, Chinese and European merchants. Sites reflecting those influences include Fort Kochi, a settlement with tiled colonial bungalows and diverse houses of worship. Cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, typical of Kochi, have been in use for centuries.

When to visit

Although a year-round destination, the most popular months to visit include May and Dec–Jan. Kochi has a humid tropical climate. There are torrential rains May–Oct, during the monsoon season. Dec–Mar is generally dry. Key events include the lively Cochin Carnival (Dec), held in Fort Kochi old town, with colorful street parades, music and dancing. The Indira Gandhi Boat Race (Dec), held in sheltered backwaters, is a competition featuring long wooden boats, paddled by dozens of oarsmen.
